In der Schlacht auf dem Peipussee vernichtete am 5. April 1242 ein russisches Heer unter Führung des Nowgoroder Fürsten Alexander Newski eine Streitmacht des Livländischen Ordens – der Vereinigung aus Deutschem Orden und Schwertbrüderorden – und setzte damit deren Ostexpansion ein Ende. Während traditionelle russische Historiker die Bedeutung der Schlacht stark überhöht haben, werden ihr Umfang und ihre Tragweite in der internationalen Geschichtswissenschaft bis heute kontrovers diskutiert.
