La Rambla von Barcelona war ursprünglich ein ausgetrockneter Flusslauf, der bei heftigem Regen das Wasser von den Bergen zum Meer leitete.
La Rambla ist eine breite, belebte und gemütliche Boulevard, die in der Mitte nur für Fußgänger zugänglich ist und in südöstlicher Richtung verläuft, nämlich vom Plaça de Catalunya bis zum alten Hafen. Die Gesamtlänge der La Rambla beträgt über 1 km. La Rambla ist ein wichtiger Verkehrsknotenpunkt für den öffentlichen Nahverkehr mit Bushaltestellen sowie U-Bahn- und Bahnhöfen. Auf beiden Seiten der La Rambla neben dem Fußgängerbereich befindet sich ein Abschnitt mit dichtem Stadtverkehr. Die Rambla ist in fünf Teile unterteilt, weshalb die Spanier auch oft von „Las Ramblas“ sprechen.
