Die Schlacht von Clavijo fand am 23. Mai 844 zwischen Ramiro I. von Asturien und Abd al-Rahman II., Emir von Córdoba, statt. Diese Legende wurde erschaffen, um der Schlacht von Simancas im Jahr 939 zwischen Ramiro II. von León und Abd al-Rahman III. mehr Ruhm zu verleihen. Die Geschichte ist folgende: Ramiro I., der zehnte Prinz von Asturien nach Pelayo, hatte am Vortag die Schlacht von Albelda verloren. In der Nacht erschien der heilige Jakobus und rügte ihn, die Schlacht fortzusetzen. Am nächsten Tag kämpfte Jakobus, auf einem weißen Pferd sitzend, an der Seite der Spanier. Ein überwältigender Sieg für die Christen, wofür er den Beinamen matamoros oder Landeschlächter erhielt. Das gehört zur Geschichte der Reconquista. Bis 1808 gab es eine jährliche Feier in der Kathedrale von Santiago de Compostela: das Voto de Santiago.
