La battaglia di Clavijo ebbe luogo il 23 maggio 844 tra Ramiro I delle Asturie e Abd al-Rahman II, emiro di Cordova. Questa leggenda è stata creata per dare maggiore gloria alla battaglia di Simancas nel 939 tra Ramiro II di León e Abd al-Rahman III. La storia è la seguente: Ramiro I, decimo principe delle Asturie, dopo Pelayo, aveva perso la battaglia di Albelda il giorno prima. Durante la notte, san Giacomo apparve e lo rimproverò per aver continuato la battaglia. Il giorno seguente, seduto su un cavallo bianco, Giacomo combatté al fianco degli spagnoli. Una vittoria sonante per i cristiani, da cui il suo soprannome di matamoros o abbattitore di lande. Questo appartiene alla storia della Reconquista. Fino al 1808, c'era una commemorazione annuale nella cattedrale di Santiago di Compostela: il Voto di Santiago.
