Das Dorf Les Baux-de-Provence gab dem Aluminium-Erz Bauxit seinen Namen. Es wurde in der Nähe dieses Dorfes 1821 von dem Geologen Pierre Berthier identifiziert. Der Name Pierre Berthiers ist auch als einer der 72 französischen Wissenschaftler oder Ingenieure auf dem Eiffelturm geschrieben.
Les Baux ist jetzt eines der malerischsten Dörfer in Frankreich. Seine Bevölkerung ist ein Bruchteil der Spitzenbevölkerung von über 4.000, und viele seiner Gebäude sind malerische Ruinen.
Die dramatischen Felsen und Klippen in der Umgebung sollen Dante Alighieri inspiriert haben in seinen lebhaften Beschreibungen des Fegefeuers im Inferno.
