Der Erfinder Claude Chappe stellte auf dem Hügel l'Étoile einen Tachygraphen auf. Dies war eine Konstruktion, mit der er Informationen übermitteln konnte. Dies geschah ungefähr an dem Ort, an dem heute der Arc de Triomphe steht. Dies war jedoch die Zeit unmittelbar nach der Französischen Revolution. Die Bevölkerung traute diesen Aktivitäten jedoch nicht. Man vermutete, dass geheime Informationen an "den Feind" übermittelt wurden. Eine wütende Menge zog auf den Hügel, um Claude Chappe zu lynchen. Er konnte rechtzeitig fliehen, aber das Gerät wurde von der Menge zerstört.
