El inventor Claude Chappe colocó un taquigrafó en la colina l'Étoile. Esta era una construcción con la que podía transmitir información. Estaba aproximadamente en el lugar donde ahora se encuentra el Arco de Triunfo. Sin embargo, este era el período justo después de la Revolución Francesa. La población no confiaba en estas actividades. Se sospechaba que se estaba transmitiendo información secreta al "enemigo". Una multitud enojada se dirigió a la colina para linchar a Claude Chappe. Él pudo escapar a tiempo, pero el aparato fue destruido por la multitud.
