De uitvinder Claude Chappe plaatste op de heuvel l'Étoile een tachygraaf. Dit was een constructie waarmee hij informatie kon doorseinen. Deze stond ongeveer op de plaats waar nu de Arc de Triomphe stond. Dit was echter de periode net na de Franse Revolutie. De bevolking vertrouwde echter deze activiteiten niet. Men vermoedde dat geheime informatie werd doorgeseind naar "de vijand". Een boze menigte trok op naar de heuvel om Claude Chappe te lynchen. Hij kon tijdig vluchten maar het toestel werd door de menigte vernield.
