The inventor Claude Chappe placed on the hill l'Étoile a tachograph. This device could transfer messages from one hill to another. The tachograph was put on the site of the Arc de Triomphe. This was the period just after the French Revolution. The population, however, dind't trust these activities. It was presumed that secret information was transmitted to "the enemy". An angry crowd marched to the mound to lynch Claude Chappe. He could flee but his device got destroyed by the crowd.
