Jahrhunderts von Herzog Louis d'Orléans errichtet wurde, lag das Schloss Pierrefonds in Trümmern, als Napoleon III. beschloss, Eugène Viollet-le-Duc mit dem Wiederaufbau zu beauftragen. Fast dreißig Jahre lang dauerte die Wiederherstellung des Schlosses Pierrefonds, und obwohl Eugène Viollet-le-Duc dem ursprünglichen gotischen Stil treu blieb, nahm er sich einige Freiheiten gegenüber der archäologischen Wahrheit. Das Ergebnis ist jedoch beeindruckend: eine Zugbrücke, acht imposante Verteidigungstürme, ein Bergfried... für einen magischen Besuch im Land der Ritter am Rande des Waldes von Compiègne!
