Das Schloss Thorens befindet sich in der Gemeinde Thorens-Glières in Haute-Savoie, etwa zwanzig Kilometer nordöstlich von Annecy, am Ausgang des Dorfes, an der Straße, die zum Plateau des Glières führt.
Es wird oft mit dem Schloss Sales verwechselt, seinem ehemaligen Nachbarn in einigen hundert Metern Entfernung: Sales wurde auf Befehl des Königs von Frankreich, Ludwig XIII., im Jahr 1630 zerstört. Das Schloss Thorens wird auch fälschlicherweise „Schloss Thorens-Glières“ genannt. Tatsächlich ist „Thorens-Glières“ der Name, den das Dorf seit der Befreiung trägt; seit dem 19. April 1947, genau genommen. Das Schloss selbst hat immer einfach „Schloss Thorens“ geheißen. Einige alte Dokumente bezeichnen es jedoch als „Schloss von Compey“, nach den ersten Besitzern: den mächtigen Herren von Compey.
