Het kasteel van Thorens ligt op de gemeente Thorens-Glières in Haute-Savoie, ongeveer twintig kilometer ten noordoosten van Annecy, aan de rand van het dorp, langs de weg die naar het plateau van Glières leidt.
Het wordt vaak verward met het kasteel van Sales, zijn voormalige buur op enkele honderden meters afstand: Sales werd op bevel van de koning van Frankrijk, Lodewijk XIII, in 1630 vernietigd. Het kasteel van Thorens wordt ook onterecht het "kasteel van Thorens-Glières" genoemd. In feite is "Thorens-Glières" de naam die het dorp sinds de bevrijding draagt; sinds 19 april 1947, precies. Het kasteel zelf heeft altijd en simpelweg "kasteel van Thorens" geheten. Sommige oude documenten kwalificeren het echter als "kasteel van Compey", naar de naam van zijn eerste eigenaren: de machtige heren van Compey.
