Mit seinen 1531 m ist der Grand Colombier der höchste Berg des Bugey, einer Region im Département Ain, die sich zwischen Oyonnax, knapp nördlich von Nantua, bis Belley, westlich von Aix-les-Bains erstreckt. Durch das Wirrwarr kleiner Zufahrtsstraßen lässt sich der Colombier von Westen aus nicht leicht besteigen. Für Motorradfahrer ist das hingegen ein Vorteil. Es erfordert einiges an Kletter- und Kurvenarbeit. Der Ausblick vom Gipfel lohnt sich wirklich: er umfasst die Jura, das Rhonetal, das Massif Central und die Alpen mit dem Mont-Blanc und bei klarem Wetter die Seen von Léman, Bourget und Annecy.
