Das im 5. Arrondissement von Paris angesiedelte Collège de France ist einmalig in Frankreich und ohne Vergleich in der westlichen Welt . Obwohl es mit seinen Professuren und Instituten universitären Charakter hat, kennt es keine eingeschriebenen Studierenden, kein durchstrukturiertes Lehrprogramm und keine Abschlusszeugnisse. Vielmehr dient es der freien natur- und geisteswissenschaftlichen Grundlagenforschung und deren publikumswirksamer Vermittlung in Form von Veröffentlichungen sowie von Vorlesungen, die kostenlos allen Interessierten zugänglich sind. Der offizielle Auftrag des Collège ist es, „das Wissen in seiner Entstehung zu lehren“ .
