Le Collège de France, anciennement nommé Collège royal, est un grand établissement d'enseignement et de recherche, institué par François Ier en 1530. Il est situé place Marcelin-Berthelot dans le Ve arrondissement de Paris, au cœur du Quartier latin.
Recherche et enseignement y sont étroitement liés, et son ambition est d'enseigner « le savoir en train de se constituer dans tous les domaines des lettres, des sciences ou des arts ». Il dispense donc des cours de haut niveau qui sont gratuits, non diplômants et ouverts à tous sans condition ni inscription. Cela en fait un lieu à part dans le paysage intellectuel français.
