Das 1928 errichtete Denkmal für die Gefallenen und Kinder von Verdun stützt sich auf den Halbmond La Chaussée, dessen Bau von Marschall de Vauban im 17. Jahrhundert angeordnet wurde. Es steht an der Stelle der 1916 zerstörten Militärschlachterei. Das Kriegerdenkmal stellt die fünf Korps der französischen Armee dar, die während der Schlacht von 1916 eingesetzt wurden.
Von links nach rechts sind zu sehen: ein Reiter, ein Pionier der Pioniertruppe, ein Soldat der Infanterie, auch "Poilu" genannt, ein Artillerist und ein Soldat der Territorialtruppe. Diese fünf Soldaten bilden eine Mauer, die das Motto von Verdun symbolisiert: "On ne passe pas" (Man kommt nicht vorbei). Am Fuß des Denkmals stehen die Namen der Soldaten, die im Ersten und Zweiten Weltkrieg gefallen sind.
