Hatton, Bischof von Verdun, ließ dort im 9. Jahrhundert eine befestigte Burg bauen. An diesem Standort wurde die aktuelle Burg nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg dank eines amerikanischen Wohltäters, Miss Skinner, wieder aufgebaut.
