Hatton, vescovo di Verdun, fece costruire lì un castello fortificato nel IX secolo. Fu proprio in questo sito che l'attuale castello fu ricostruito dopo la Prima Guerra Mondiale grazie a un benefattore americano: Miss Skinner.
