Sainte-Ménehould ist eine malerische und zugleich einladende Stadt. Früher hieß die Stadt Château sur Aisne und verdankt ihren Namen Manehildis, die sich im 5. Jahrhundert durch ihre Güte auszeichnete.
Dom Pérignon wurde 1639 hier geboren. Ludwig XVI. kam am 21. Juni 1791 durch die Stadt. Die Stadt wurde 1719 durch einen Brand vollständig zerstört und ab 1728 in einem architektonischen Ensemble des 18. Jahrhunderts wieder aufgebaut.
In der Nähe sind die Stätten Argonnais, die vom 1. Weltkrieg zeugen, und die historische Stätte der Schlacht von Valmy ein Muss.
