Sainte-Ménehould es una ciudad pintoresca y acogedora. Antiguamente llamada Château sur Aisne, la ciudad debe su nombre a Manehildis, que se distinguió por su bondad en el siglo V.
Dom Pérignon nació aquí en 1639. Luis XVI pasó por allí el 21 de junio de 1791. La ciudad fue completamente destruida por un incendio en 1719 y reconstruida a partir de 1728 en un conjunto arquitectónico del siglo XVIII.
En las cercanías, no hay que perderse los emplazamientos de Argonne de la Primera Guerra Mundial y el lugar histórico de la batalla de Valmy.
