Der Krieg von 1870 zwischen Frankreich und Preußen war der Auslöser, der die Welt in 75 Jahren aus dem Gleichgewicht brachte.
Im August 1870 zog eine hastig in Châlons (in der Champagne) aufgestellte Armee in die Ardennen ein, um den Vormarsch der feindlichen Truppen zu verhindern. Nach anderthalb Monaten erklärte sich der besiegte Napoleon III. zum Gefangenen der Unterpräfektur Sedan, bevor er die Kapitulation in Donchery unterzeichnete. Dies wurde das Sedan-Debakel genannt.
1875 wurde die Bourbon-Bastion entfernt, was den Bau des neuen Zentrums der Stadt, der Place Alsace-Lorraine, ermöglichte. In der Mitte des Platzes steht das Denkmal für die Toten von 1870, ein Werk des Bildhauers Aristide Croisy aus den Ardennen.
