La guerra del 1870 tra Francia e Prussia fu la causa che disturbò l'equilibrio nel mondo per 75 anni.
Nel agosto del 1870, un esercito formato in fretta a Châlons (in Champagne) intraprese la strada per le Ardenne per ostacolare l'avanzata delle truppe nemiche. Dopo un mese e mezzo, il sconfitto Napoleone III si dichiarò prigioniero della sotto-prefettura di Sedan, prima di firmare la Capitolazione a Donchery. Questo venne chiamato il disastro di Sedan.
Nel 1875, il bastione Bourbon fu rimosso, permettendo così la costruzione del nuovo centro della città, la Place Alsace-Lorraine. Al centro della piazza si trova il monumento ai caduti del 1870, opera dello scultore ardennese Aristide Croisy.
