Der Legende nach machte Attila im Jahr 451 Halt im römischen Lager Bar-sur-Aube und geriet in den Bann der Jungfrau Germaine .
Angeblich bat Attila sie, ihn zu heiraten, aber sie weigerte sich, weil sie ein Keuschheitsgelübde abgelegt hatte ... Attila schnitt ihr dann den Kopf ab! Germaine wurde heiliggesprochen und gab dem Hügel, auf dem sie gefoltert wurde, ihren Namen. Zu Ehren seines Andenkens wurde auf dem Hügel eine Kapelle errichtet.
