Volgens de legende stopte Attila in 451 bij het Romeinse kamp in Bar-sur-Aube en raakte hij in de ban van de maagd Germaine.
Attila zou haar ten huwelijk hebben gevraagd, maar ze weigerde omdat ze een gelofte van kuisheid had afgelegd... Attila hakte toen haar hoofd af! Germaine werd heilig verklaard en gaf haar naam aan de heuvel waar ze werd gemarteld. Op de top van de heuvel werd een kapel opgericht om haar nagedachtenis te eren.
