Ursprünglich war die Kirche dem Heiligen Johannes dem Täufer geweiht. Jahrhundert wurde sie zum Gemeindezentrum und erhielt den heiligen Bischof von Orléans als Schutzpatron.
Der Heilige Aignan war im 5. Jahrhundert einer der berühmtesten Päpste Galliens und der Befreier der Stadt Orléans.
Die Mitglieder der Familie des Heiligen Aignan, die "Aniani", wurden in einer weit entfernten Stadt des Reiches angesiedelt, in Sabaria in Pannonien, einer von Augustus eroberten römischen Provinz, die in unserem modernen Europa dem südlichen Ungarn entspricht.
