Oorspronkelijk was de kerk gewijd aan Johannes de Doper. Toen het in de 14e eeuw werd uitgebreid en gerenoveerd, werd het een parochiecentrum en kreeg het als patroonheilige de heilige bisschop van Orléans.
In de 5e eeuw was Sint Aignan een van de meest illustere pontifices in Gallië en de bevrijder van de stad Orléans.
De leden van de familie van de heilige Aignan, de "Aniani", waren gevestigd in een stad ver van het rijk in Sabaria in Pannonia, een door Augustus veroverde Romeinse provincie, die in ons moderne Europa overeenkomt met het zuiden van Hongarije.
