Originalmente, la iglesia estaba dedicada a San Juan Bautista. Después, cuando se amplió y renovó en el siglo XIV, se convirtió en un centro parroquial y tomó como patrón al santo obispo de Orleans.
En el siglo V, San Aignan fue uno de los pontífices más ilustres de la Galia y el liberador de la ciudad de Orleans.
Los miembros de la familia de San Aignan, los "Aniani", se establecieron en una ciudad alejada del imperio en Sabaria, en Panonia, una provincia romana conquistada por Augusto, que corresponde en nuestra Europa moderna al sur de Hungría.
