In origine, la chiesa era dedicata a San Giovanni Battista. Poi, quando fu ampliato e ristrutturato nel XIV secolo, divenne un centro parrocchiale e prese come patrono il santo vescovo di Orléans.
Nel V secolo, Sant'Aignan fu uno dei più illustri pontefici della Gallia e il liberatore della città di Orléans.
I membri della famiglia di Sant'Aignan, gli "Aniani", si stabilirono in una città lontana dall'impero, a Sabaria, in Pannonia, una provincia romana conquistata da Augusto, che nell'Europa moderna corrisponde all'Ungheria meridionale.
