Lauw gehörte zur Abtei von Masevaux, die dort ein Sägewerk betrieb.
Als Grenzdorf von 1870 bis 1914 und von 1940 bis 1944 hatte Lauw eine Zollstelle, die die Straßen nach Belfort kontrollierte.
Im Jahr 1907 richteten die amerikanischen Truppen in den ehemaligen Steinbrüchen des Kalkofens ein Feldlazarett ein. Bevor Lauw am 26. November 1944 befreit wurde, wurde es von Artillerie beschossen.
Das Dorf liegt auf einem Bruchfeld, das Primär- und Sekundärgestein voneinander trennt, und weist einen interessanten Untergrund auf.
