Lauw formaba parte de la abadía de Masevaux, que tenía allí un aserradero.
Pueblo fronterizo de 1870 a 1914 y de 1940 a 1944, Lauw contaba con una aduana que controlaba las carreteras que conducían a Belfort.
En 1907, las tropas americanas instalaron un hospital de campaña en las antiguas canteras de cal. Antes de ser liberada el 26 de noviembre de 1944, Lauw fue alcanzada por el fuego de artillería.
Situado en una zona de fractura que separa las rocas primarias de las secundarias, el pueblo posee un subsuelo interesante.

- la cueva de Holhenstein
