Lauw faceva parte dell'Abbazia di Masevaux, che vi aveva una segheria.
Villaggio di frontiera dal 1870 al 1914 e dal 1940 al 1944, Lauw aveva un ufficio doganale che controllava le strade che portavano a Belfort.
Nel 1907, le truppe americane allestirono un ospedale da campo nelle vecchie cave di calce. Prima di essere liberata, il 26 novembre 1944, Lauw fu colpita dal fuoco dell'artiglieria.
Situato su una zona di frattura che separa rocce primarie e secondarie, il villaggio presenta un sottosuolo interessante.
