Im alten Stadtkern gibt es nur noch wenige Spuren der früheren Präsenz des Wassers. Der Verlauf von drei der vier Ill-Kanäle, die die Stadt einst in ihrem südlichen Teil umgaben, ist auf dem Boden markiert, ebenso wie die Lage des ehemaligen Basler Tors (zwischen der Rue des Cordiers und der Passage de la Demi-lune). Diese Kanäle, Trankenbach, Karpfenbach und Mittelbach, wurden nach und nach zugeschüttet. Der geschwungene Verlauf der Theaterpassage, die ganz aus Glas und Eisen besteht und die einzige im Elsass erhaltene überdachte Passage aus dem 19. Jahrhundert ist, weist auf die ehemalige Lage des Mittelbachs hin.
