There are few traces of the ancient presence of water in the ancient heart of the city. The course of three of the four canals of the Ill, which once surrounded the southern part of the city, is marked out on the ground, as is the location of the former Basel Gate (between the Rue des Cordiers and the Half Moon Passage). These canals, Trankenbach, Karpfenbach and Mittelbach, are gradually being filled in. The curved course of the theatre passage, made of glass and iron, the only remaining 19th century covered passage in Alsace, indicates the former location of the Mittelbach.
