Hay pocos rastros de la antigua presencia de agua en el centro de la ciudad. El recorrido de tres de los cuatro canales del Ill, que antaño rodeaban la parte sur de la ciudad, está marcado en el suelo, así como la ubicación de la antigua puerta de Basilea (entre la calle de los Soldados y el pasaje de la Demi-luna). Estos canales, Trankenbach, Karpfenbach y Mittelbach, se están rellenando poco a poco. La línea curva del pasaje del teatro, de vidrio y hierro, único pasaje cubierto del siglo XIX que se conserva en Alsacia, indica la antigua ubicación del Mittelbach.
