Er zijn weinig sporen over van de vroegere aanwezigheid van water in het oude hart van de stad. De loop van drie van de vier grachten van de Ill die ooit de stad in het zuiden omringden, is op de grond gemarkeerd, evenals de locatie van de voormalige Bazelse Poort (tussen de Rue des Cordiers en de Passage de la Demi-lune). Deze kanalen, Trankenbach, Karpfenbach en Mittelbach, worden geleidelijk gedempt. De gebogen lijn van de Theaterpassage, geheel van glas en ijzer, de enige overdekte passage uit de 19e eeuw die in de Elzas is overgebleven, geeft de vroegere locatie van de Mittelbach aan.
