Als befestigte Stadt aus rosa Sandstein beherbergt Phalsbourg noch immer wertvolle Zeugnisse seiner stolzen militärischen Vergangenheit: Kasernen, Pulvermagazine, die Porte de France im Westen und die Porte d'Allemagne im Osten, die die Stadtgrenzen in einer großartigen Architektur von Vauban markieren. Die Garnisonsstadt wurde 1680 von Vauban befestigt.
