Phalsbourg, geboorteplaats van Emile Erckmann. Als versterkte stad van roze zandsteen getuigt Phalsbourg nog steeds van haar trotse militaire verleden: kazernes, kruitmagazijnen, de Porte de France in het westen en de Porte d'Allemagne in het oosten, die de grenzen van de stad afbakenen in prachtige Vauban-architectuur. De garnizoensstad werd in 1680 door Vauban versterkt.
