Das Viertel am Ufer der Vienne, am Fuße der Kathedrale, ist ein besonderer Ort. Der Fluss wird von den Ponticauds (Brückenmenschen) mit ihrer reichen Sozialgeschichte bewohnt und von zwei bemerkenswerten mittelalterlichen Brücken aus dem 13. Jahrhundert überquert, der Brücke Saint-Etienne und der Brücke Saint-Martial. Die Vienne hat ihrer industriellen Vergangenheit abgeschworen, ihr natürliches Aussehen wiedererlangt und an ihren Ufern wurden angenehme Spazierwege angelegt. Kanufahrten, Kletterwände, Rudern, Joggen, Bouleplätze, Restaurants und Straßencafés prägen den Rhythmus der Ufer dieses Grünzugs, der von dem berühmten japanischen Schriftsteller Shimazaki Tozon liebevoll beschrieben wurde.
