El barrio ribereño de Vienne, a los pies de la catedral, es un lugar especial. Habitado por los Ponticauds (gente de los puentes), con una rica historia social, el río está atravesado por dos notables puentes medievales del siglo XIII, el de Saint-Etienne y el de Saint-Martial. Tras su pasado industrial, el Vienne ha recuperado su estado natural y se han acondicionado agradables paseos a lo largo de sus orillas. Piragüismo, escalada, remo, footing, petanca, restaurantes y terrazas de cafés jalonan las orillas de este corredor verde, descrito con cariño por el célebre escritor japonés Shimazaki Tozon.
