Um seiner Jagdleidenschaft nachzugehen, ließ François-Marie, Sohn des Herzogs von Vitry und Herr von Châteauvillain, 1655 eine sechs Kilometer lange Mauer aus Stein errichten und reservierte so 272 ha Wald am östlichen Eingang der Stadt.
Im Laufe der Jahre vermehrte sich das Wild dort und "formte" den Park nach seinen Vorstellungen.
Die 100 Damhirsche, die im Park lebten, wuchsen mit Eisenhut, Giftzäpfchen, Jolibois und anderen farbenfrohen Pflanzen, die der Waldlandschaft ein sehr ungewöhnliches Aussehen verliehen.
Man betritt den Parc aux Daims durch die Porte Madame, eines der drei Stadttore von Châteauvillain im Mittelalter.
Der Parc aux daims ist vom 1. November bis zum 30. April von 9:00 bis 17:00 Uhr und vom 1. Mai bis zum 30. September von 8:00 bis 20:00 Uhr geöffnet.
