In 1655, François-Marie, son of the Duc de Vitry and Lord of Châteauvillain, had a six-kilometer stone wall built to allow him to indulge his passion for hunting, thus reserving 272 hectares of forest at the eastern entrance to the town.
Over the years, game has multiplied and "shaped" the park to its liking.
The hundred or so fallow deer that live in the park have left certain species behind, allowing aconite, dompte-venin, jolibois and other very colorful plants to develop, giving a very unusual appearance to the forest landscape.
The Parc aux Daims is entered through the Porte Madame, one of the three gateways to the town of Châteauvillain in the Middle Ages.
The Parc aux Daims is open from November 1 to April 30, from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, and from May 1 to September 30, from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm.
