Früher durchquerte ein Kanal frei die Stadt und folgte der Trasse der ersten Befestigungsanlagen.

Zwischen 1720 und 1725 wurde dieser Kanal um mehr als einen Kilometer umgedreht, um Platz zu gewinnen. Der untere Garten ist der letzte Teil des Kanals, der abgedeckt wird. Die Gärtner von Hoymille legten hier mit ihren Lastkähnen an , daher der Name „schöner Gärtner“ für diese Gartenpassage.
