Antiguamente, un canal atravesaba libremente la ciudad y seguía el recorrido de las primeras fortificaciones.
Entre 1720 y 1725, este canal fue abovedado a lo largo de más de un kilómetro para ganar espacio. El jardín inferior es la última parte del canal que se cubrió. Los jardineros de Hoymille atracaban aquí con sus barcazas , de ahí el nombre de "jardinero hermoso" para este pasaje del jardín.
