In passato, un canale attraversava liberamente la città e seguiva il percorso delle prime fortificazioni.
Dal 1720 al 1725 questo canale fu scavato per oltre un chilometro per guadagnare spazio. Il giardino inferiore è l'ultima parte del canale che fu coperta. I giardinieri di Hoymille attraccavano qui con le loro chiatte , da qui il nome "bel giardiniere" per questo passaggio del giardino.
