Minchinhampton ist eine alte Marktstadt der Cotswolds im Stroud-District in Gloucestershire, im Südwesten Englands. Die Stadt liegt auf einem Hügel, 4 Meilen südöstlich von Stroud. Die Allmende bietet weite Ausblicke über die Severn-Mündung nach Wales und weiter in die Cotswolds.
Der Ortsname 'Minchinhampton' ist erstmals im Domesday Book von 1086 als Hantone dokumentiert. Im Assize Rolls von 1221 erscheint er als Minchenhamtone. Der Name stammt ursprünglich vom Altenglischen Heatun, was "hohe Stadt oder Siedlung" bedeutet. Das zusätzliche Element ist das Altenglische mynecen, was Nonne bedeutet und mit dem modernen Wort "Mönch" verwandt ist. Minchinhampton gehörte einst zu dem Nonnenkloster in Caen in der Normandie, Frankreich. Somit bedeutet der Name "die hohe Stadt oder Siedlung der Nonnen". Auf einer Karte von 1825 wird die Stadt als "Minching-Hampton" bezeichnet.
