Am 10. Oktober 1957 kam es in einem britischen Kernreaktor in Windscale zu einem Brand. Dieser setzte eine Wolke mit erheblichen Mengen radioaktiven Materials frei, die sich über Großbritannien und über das europäische Festland verteilte. Auf der heute gültigen siebenstufigen Internationalen Bewertungsskala für nukleare Ereignisse wird dieser Unfall als Ernster Unfall eingestuft, also als Unfall mit Auswirkungen außerhalb des Betriebsgeländes und schweren Schäden am Reaktorkern . Die Strahlung im Reaktor ist bis 2005 auf etwa ein Prozent des sehr hohen Wertes nach dem Brand abgeklungen.
