Die Station befand sich an der Great Central Main Line, die zwischen London Marylebone und Manchester über Sheffield Victoria verlief. Sie wurde am 1. Juni 1892 als Staveley Town eröffnet und am 25. September 1950 von British Railways in Staveley Central umbenannt, um Verwirrungen mit der ehemaligen MR-Station, ebenfalls Staveley Town genannt, die etwa 250 Yards entfernt an derselben Straße lag, zu verringern. Letztere Station lag an den Linien Barrow Hill nach Clowne und Barrow Hill nach Pleasley West. Die Umbenennung verringerte auch die Wahrscheinlichkeit, dass die Leute die Station mit der in Barrow Hill und Staveley Works verwechseln, die am 18. Juni 1951 offiziell in Barrow Hill umbenannt wurde, um die Stationen weiter zu unterscheiden.
