La stazione si trovava sulla Great Central Main Line che correva tra Londra Marylebone e Manchester attraverso Sheffield Victoria. Fu inaugurata il 1° giugno 1892 come Staveley Town e fu rinominata Staveley Central il 25 settembre 1950 dalle British Railways per ridurre la confusione con la ex stazione MR, anch'essa chiamata Staveley Town, che si trovava a circa 250 yard sulla stessa strada. Quest'ultima stazione si trovava sulle linee Barrow Hill per Clowne e Barrow Hill per Pleasley West. La rinominazione ha anche ridotto la probabilità che le persone confondessero la stazione con quella di Barrow Hill e Staveley Works, che fu ufficialmente rinominata Barrow Hill il 18 giugno 1951 per distinguere ulteriormente le stazioni.
