Arundo donax oder Riesenschilf ist typisch für Feuchtgebiete. Ovid beschreibt in Metamorphosen die Legende von Pan. Pan war in die Nymphen Syrinx verliebt. Aber Syrinx wollte ihn nicht und rief ihre Schwestern um Hilfe. Pan war darüber nicht glücklich und verwandelte sie alle in einen dichten Schilfrohrbestand, wie man ihn hier finden kann. Dann schnitt er eine Reihe der röhrenförmigen Stängel in unterschiedliche Längen und verband sie mit Wachs zu den Panflöten.
