Arundo donax of reuzenriet is typisch voor wetlands. Ovidius beschrijft in Metamorphosis de legende van Pan. Pan was verliefd op de nimfen Syrinx. Maar Syrinx wilde hem niet en riep haar zussen om hulp. Pan was daar niet blij mee en toverde ze allemaal om in een dichte rietkraag zoals je ze hier kunt vinden. Vervolgens sneed hij een aantal buisvormige stengels in verschillende lengtes en verenigde ze met was om de panfluit te vormen.
